CAPS Members at George Fox University
by Debi Smith, PsyD
My summer journey by rail took me through the beautiful
state of Oregon where I had the pleasure of spending a
few days with Dr. Bill Buhrow and his delightful family
in Newberg. Bill is not only the Dean of Student Services
and Assistant Professor of Psychology at George
Fox University, he is also our CAPS West Treasurer.
Bill graciously provided a personally guided tour of the
Newberg / Portland area, including some really spectacular
views of the Oregon landscape, as we discussed various
goals and possibilities for the future of CAPS West.
Bill and I also met Dr. Richard Shaw for coffee at the
local Starbucks. Richard earned his Doctor of Marriage
and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary and
has been a CAPS member since 1998. As Assistant Professor
of Marriage and Family Therapy in the Graduate
Department of Counseling, Richard is interested in
addressing the needs of MFTs, as well as in finding ways
to assist individuals in the transition from student to
professional. Together we explored the potential usefulness
of CAPS conferences as an means whereby graduate students
can gain valuable experience in presenting their own research
and papers.
While in Newberg, I also enjoyed an inspiring conversation
with Dr. Rodger Bufford, Director of Integration in the
Doctor
of Psychology Program. A graduate of the University
of Illinois at Urbana, Rodger has authored books, chapters,
and articles and made numerous presentations on topics
related to the integration of psychology and the Christian
faith. He has been a member of CAPS since 1978 and was
the recipient of the CAPS West Distinguished Member Award
in 1999. Rodger is also a very active contributor to the
CAPS West Integration Forum. Students, in particular,
enjoy this unparalleled opportunity to draw on Rodger’s
experience, insight, and wisdom. If you’d like to
join this online discussion, email the Regional
Director.
Introducing
Our New Area Coordinator for Portland-Newberg
Dr. Richard Shaw was recently appointed as Area Coordinator.
Richard graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary and
is now Assistant Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy
at George
Fox University. He has been an active CAPS Member
since 1998. He writes:
I am excited about this opportunity to work with CAPS
to further the integration of psychology and theology
for therapists and pastors in the Northwest. There is
no greater work then this. May we do it well as professionals
and as instruments of grace for Jesus Christ.
In order to connect therapists and pastors in the community,
we plan to offer 2-4 annual breakfast meetings at GFU,
followed by presentations on relevant integration topics
by leading professionals in the field, at which we will
be offering CE credit. I am currently building a committee
including such noted professionals as Dr. Bill Buhrow
and Dr. Kristina Kays. We are excited to offer both
professional and personal opportunities for care and
connection during the next year.
