CAPS Executive Director
Notifies Board of Plans to Move On*
Dr. Randolph (Randy) Sanders has announced that he will
leave his position as Executive Director of the Christian
Association for Psychological Studies, after nearly eleven
years of service. His resignation will be effective at
the end of February, 2005.
In a letter to the CAPS International Board of Directors,
Sanders described his tenure as “wonderful years
working as a servant to a professional community whose
mission I believe in very deeply.” He expressed
appreciation for the many dedicated CAPS leaders who volunteered
their time and talent to help the organization and to
help him during his time as Director. As he put it, “my
fondest memories in this office will be of the relationships
I have been privileged to enjoy with caring Christian
people, committed to serving Christ and His kingdom in
their vocational lives.”
He noted that just as board members graduate from board
service, he and his wife, Bette, felt it was time for
them to follow the call to other forms of service. Bette
has been serving faithfully as the Administrative Assistant
for CAPS throughout Randy’s tenure. Sanders told
the board that he and Bette had been prayerfully contemplating
their future with CAPS for over a year now, and felt that
this was the right time to make this decision.
Sanders, who is a psychologist, noted that he cut back
a successful practice to take the half-time position as
CAPS Executive Director, and he said he plans to expand
his practice, with special emphasis on anxiety disorders,
and to pursue academic teaching opportunities. He will
continue to provide CE workshops on professional ethics
and risk management, and will resume his active writing/research
program.
The CAPS Board is preparing a job description for the
Executive Director’s position that will be circulated
soon. CAPS members who are interested in the position
should watch the CAPS Report and the web site for more
details. The Executive Director of CAPS is the chief executive
officer (CEO) of the association and serves under the
oversight and direction of the Board of Directors.

CAPS 2004 CONVENTION
A SUNNY SUCCESS
Beautiful spring weather and and three full days of outstanding
presentations welcomed guests to the CAPS 2004 convention
in St. Petersburg, Florida recently. Dr. Gary Collins,
one of the "fathers" of the integration movement
and a long-time member of CAPS, returned to give the opening
night lecture. In his dynamic, inspiring way, Gary helped
us look at the rampant, galloping change that is taking
place in our world today. He inspired us all to embrace
the change without getting overwhelmed ourselves....and
he encouraged us to help the people we serve make the
most of their changing environments too. Participants
also heard keynote addresses by Jerry Regier, Secretary
of the Florida Department of Children and Families; C.
Stephen Evans, Professor of Philosophy at Baylor University;
Nancy Thurston from George Fox University; and author-marital
psychologist, David Clarke. Watch for more articles about
the conference in upcoming editions of the CAPS Report
Newsletter.
"COUNTDOWN TO
FIFTY" CELEBRATES HERITAGE, LOOKS TO THE FUTURE
Fifty years ago this year, a small band of mental health
professionals met for a conference on psychology and Christianity.
Participants so enjoyed that conference of fellowshipping
and interchange, that they decided to hold another meeting
the following year, and in 1956, they officially began
the Christian Association for Psychological Studies, or
CAPS, as we've come to know it today.
In recognition of those groundbreaking events, and in
celebration of our future, CAPS embarks over the next
two years on our "Countdown to Fifty," the 50th
Anniversary of CAPS. During that time, we'll reminisce
a bit about our humble beginnings and we'll look to the
exciting days ahead. Everything will culminate with our
"big birthday party" which will occur at the
CAPS International Convention in Spring, 2006. So "buckle
your seat-belts" and join us as we prepare to "Countdown
to Fifty."
