New Student Chapter Begins in
Southern California
by Jason Stolee, BA
Rosemead School of Psychology
On August 23rd, a gathering of students in Southern California
met with Dr. Debi Smith,
CAPS West Regional Director, and Dr.
Joan Jones, CAPS West Board Member, to generate
ideas and goals for the implementation of the new So Cal
Student Chapter of CAPS. It was an exciting time of brainstorming,
bonding, and breaking ground for this fledgling student
chapter.
A number of items were discussed over the course of the
evening, but they tended to hover around a few distinct
ideas. Briefly, these ideas included:
- Regular participation in the greater CAPS West community
through a student feature section in the Newsletter.
- Hosting a local continuing education event in order
to connect with the local community of Christian clinicians
and to provide greater CAPS exposure in the community.
- Assisting licensed clinicians with presentations
and seminars in order to gain valuable experience and
as preparation for students who will be doing their
own presentations in the future.
- Inviting local clinicians to attend chapter meetings
and talk about the practical aspects of how they actually
integrate their faith with their work, whether in Christian
or non-Christian settings.
- Developing a mentoring program in which students
would be paired with a clinician from whom they could
learn and with whom they could discuss questions and
share ideas in a nonacademic setting.
The newly forming southern California student chapter
of CAPS hopes to meet two to three times each year. Upcoming
meetings and events will be announced in the Regional
Director’s CAPS West Update (i.e., via
email).
The attendees of the chapter’s first meeting are
joyfully anticipating additional students in the So Cal
area becoming involved in these future gatherings! For
