2007-2008 Academic Year Greetings!

Welcome to another great year with other Pepperdine psychology students, faculty and staff who are interested in building a community of Christian faith and fellowship at our university and in talking more about how to integrate our spiritual lives with the practice of psychotherapy. I am so pleased that you have chosen to join others from all of our different campuses – West LA, Irvine/Orange County, San Fernando Valley and Malibu – in this journey.

For those of you who are new to our group, we come together in different ways: 1) on email, 2) on Facebook (in the Pepperdine groups, please see & join “the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS)” group), and 3) in person at monthly meetings, get-togethers, field trips, conferences and community service activities. If you want to learn more about our group and its history, please see the article about us in the Pepperdine GSEP Colleague Magazine. Also please see our Pepperdine website. Current members and faculty co-advisors, Dr. Kathleen Eldridge and I, look forward to the opportunity to get to know you all…

  • Want to get involved? Please join us at our events! All activities are open to Christian members and non-members of diverse (e.g., any faith) backgrounds who are interested in pursuing open, respectful discussion of religion/spirituality and psychology. So bring a friend! If you have others ideas of activities to share or add, including suggestions for meeting times/dates/locations, please email me or the whole group for discussion. Our meeting dates & locations were chosen by students – so please let your vote & voice be heard if you would like to suggest a change for next year. Click here for upcoming events.
  • Want to join our group or to renew your membership? There are 2 parts to joining.

CAPS Students Participate in Step Forward Day at Pepperdine University

CAPS Students at Pepperdine University, Graduate School of Education and Psychology, kick off every academic year by giving back to the community. The second Saturday in September, we participate in Step Forward Day, which is a day of service organized by our university.

In 2007, we assisted Hope Gardens Family Center for previously homeless women and children run their first Back to School Celebration; in 2006, we helped transform with paint and elbow grease Project Serve, a non-profit organization that offers self-help groups to the Los Angeles community; in 2005, we cultivated plants and friendships at the Crenshaw Community Gardens; and in 2004, eight of us helped to re-paint the Conejo Valley YMCA preschool.

Our chapter meets monthly for planning, fellowship, and discussion about the integration of our faith and the practice of psychology and marriage and family therapy. We bring together masters and doctoral students in clinical psychology as well as faculty and staff members from all of our campuses (Encino/San Fernando Valley, West Los Angeles, Malibu, and Orange County/Irvine) to help build community and support the mission of Pepperdine University. We also host and attend seminars and conferences on religion and psychology, engage in community service, and enjoy social activities together.

New members are welcome!
